Manager Billy Murray made his first signing for Sunderland last night, and in my opinion he signed a centre half who is just as promising now as Lockie was when he first signed.
He is Reginald Scotson, the the player whom I favourably commented upon after last Wednesday's Northern Mid-Week League game at Roker Park. The Ouston player is beautifully built for the job, standing about 5ft 11in and weighing about 12 stone.
He is in his 19th year - and that is not a "football age." He played for Durham County boys and Gateshead boys in the 1933-34 season and in the Schools' International trial at Salford that year, but he was then an inside wing forward. Scotson will continue his apprenticeship as a motor engineer at Gateshead. Portsmouth, I am told are disappointed they have not got him.
