  • Notes
    • Byrom Hall, the former home of John Byrom is situated in Slag Lane,Low ton, quite near to the western shore of the Pennington Flash, nowa pop ular boating lake near Leigh, Lancashire. Ernest Beswick Scotsonwas th e tenant farmer here from the early 1900s until the mid-1930s.
The large hall accommodated their large family of eleven children.Erne st Beswick has often been blamed for his own personal problems, and for l osing the property through reckless gambling and excessivedrinking, ha ving to be baled out by the savings of his wife’sinheritance from Trav eller’s Rest. On one occasion he went to theIsle of Man for a night wi thout letting anyone know, and was caughtby the police at Liverpool do cks and fined the next day for leavinghis horse and cart unattended ov ernight. However, often forgotten wasthe misfortune that Ernest Beswic k faced, that included irrigationproblems, and farm land around Leigh t hat was very difficult tocultivate, really only being suitable as past ure land. His livestockwas also infected by foot and mouth disease, an d the army tookpossesion of his horses for use in the 1st World War. T he house wasreputed to be haunted, but Ernest Beswick claimed to have s hot itslegs off!
